What I do:
Keen Eye LLC helps fiction and nonfiction writers ensure that the words they have written are clear, correct, and concise.
What you do:
Maybe you’ve written a short story and are ready to submit it to a contest. You want to make sure that the judges aren’t distracted by sloppy punctuation or mechanics. Maybe an agent has requested pages, and you want to ensure those pages are in tip-top condition. Maybe, when it gets right down to it, you’re not really sure where the comma goes.
I edit your short story or pages ensuring they are clear, coherent, consistent, and correct.
As I read your writing, I will fix grammar and spelling errors, and I’m also on the lookout for consistency errors, and sentences that might cause confusion. When I find an inconsistency, I write a query (which is a fancy term for making a comment) about the issue. For works of more than a few pages, I will also create a style sheet to track decisions.
Aside from grammar, spelling, and constancy, I also check that any dates, figures, or references are correct. My goal is to help you have a stellar story that communicates your prose accurately.
For all writers:
I use Microsoft Word and track changes; other platforms are available. I default to the Chicago Manual of Style and Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary for style and spelling, though we can discuss the use of other sources.
My rates fall within the Editorial Freelance Association’s recommendations for Basic, Heavy and Website copyediting.
I provide estimates for all jobs. I use a 500-word sample of your piece to determine an estimate of the time your piece will take to be copyedited. From that estimate will come my rate.
